In 1812 German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs introduced a scale from 1 to 10 to represent hardness of different minerals. Each mineral with a higher number on the scale would scratch any mineral with a lower number on the scale. Since diamond is number 10 on the list, it could not be scratched by any other material on the list. In fact, diamond cannot be scratched by any other material outside the list, either, for it is the hardest material found on earth.
